Rockdale Independent School District is empowering students for high-demand, tech-driven careers through its Information Technology (IT) Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway. The program equips students with real-world technical expertise, laying the foundation for future careers as Computer Network Support Specialists, Computer Systems Analysts, and Network and Systems Administrators.
Through a series of courses—including Principles of Information Technology, Computer Maintenance, Networking, and Practicum in Information Technology—students master the inner workings of modern hardware and networks. Students in the advanced practicum have the opportunity to graduate with industry-based certifications in cybersecurity, giving them a distinct competitive edge in college and the workforce.
While currently composed of 13 dedicated students, this "small but mighty" cohort is making a tangible impact across the district. Most recently, the class tackled a major hardware recycling project, manually disassembling and sorting 50 decommissioned computers to prepare them for eco-friendly recycling, a process that took two and a half weeks of work.
Throughout the school year, students engage in practical, industry-standard training, such as creating custom patch cabling and learning server hardening techniques. In partnership with the Rockdale ISD Technology Department, students also receive real-world hardware to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair before returning it to service.
“It works out for everyone involved,” said CTE Teacher Glenda Walker. “Our students have saved our technology team hours of time, and in return, they get valuable, hands-on experience troubleshooting and working directly with computer hardware.”
